About the Employer
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India. It is responsible for creating, upgrading, maintaining, and managing civil aviation infrastructure in India.
History and Formation
AAI was formed on April 1, 1995, by the Airports Authority of India Act, 1994. This was a result of merging two pre-existing organizations:
International Airports Authority of India (IAAI), which was responsible for international airports.
National Airports Authority (NAA), which managed domestic airports.
The merger created a single entity to ensure the integrated development of both air and ground civil aviation infrastructure in the country.
Key Functions
AAI's primary responsibilities can be divided into two major categories:
Airport Management
AAI manages the operations of numerous airports across India, including international, domestic, and customs airports, as well as civil enclaves at defense airfields. Its functions include:
Infrastructure Development: Designing, building, and modernizing airport terminals, runways, aprons, and other facilities.
Passenger Services: Providing passenger amenities and information systems at terminals.
Cargo Operations: Developing and managing cargo terminals at both international and domestic airports.
Air Navigation Services (ANS)
AAI is the sole provider of Air Traffic Management (ATM) services in the Indian airspace and in the adjoining oceanic areas. This includes:
Air Traffic Control (ATC): Ensuring the safe movement of aircraft during takeoff, landing, and en route.
Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance (CNS): Providing communication and navigation aids such as radar, Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), and other ground installations to guide aircraft.
Technological Upgrades: Implementing advanced technologies like the GAGAN (GPS-Aided Geo-Augmented Navigation) project, in collaboration with ISRO, to enhance navigation and safety.
