About the Employer

The Engine Factory Avadi (EFA) is a significant defense establishment located in Avadi, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.1 It is a unit of the Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVANI), which operates under the administrative control of the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence, Government of India.2

Key Details about EFA:

  • Primary Function: The main purpose of Engine Factory Avadi is to manufacture and overhaul high-power diesel engines.3 These engines are crucial components for a variety of defense vehicles, particularly battle tanks and other armored vehicles.4

  • Products: The factory produces multi-fuel engines that power India's main battle tanks.5 Some of its notable products include engines for the T-90 "Bhishma" tank (V92S2 engine) and the T-72 "Ajeya" tank (V-46-6 engine).6 The factory has also worked on the indigenization of these engines under the "Make in India" initiative.7

  • Technological Capabilities: EFA is known for its advanced manufacturing and testing facilities.8 It utilizes modern technology such as Flexible Manufacturing Systems, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines, and Special Purpose Machines (SPMs) to ensure high-precision and quality control.9

  • Location and Synergy: EFA is part of a larger defense hub in Avadi, which also houses other important defense establishments like the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF), the Ordnance Clothing Factory (OCF), and the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE).10 This concentration of defense-related industries creates a strong ecosystem for the development and production of military equipment.

  • Role in Indian Defence: Engine Factory Avadi plays a vital role in ensuring the self-reliance of the Indian armed forces by providing them with critical engine components, reducing the country's dependence on foreign imports. This is a key aspect of the government's push for indigenization in the defense sector.
