About the Employer

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) is an autonomous body in India that plays a crucial role in the recruitment of personnel for public sector banks and other financial institutions.

Here's a breakdown of what IBPS is and its key functions:

What is IBPS?

  • Autonomous Body: IBPS operates independently, established by the Reserve Bank of India, Central Financial Institutions, and Public Sector Banks. It functions as a Society registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, and a Public Trust under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950.

  • Central Recruitment Agency: It acts as a central agency responsible for conducting competitive examinations for various posts in the banking sector, particularly in public sector banks (excluding SBI, though SBI may use IBPS scores).

  • Mission: Its core mission is "To evolve and implement world class processes and systems of assessment / selection of personnel in a fair and objective manner for various client organisations, conduct relevant supportive research and publicise the findings."

Key Functions and Services:

  1. Conducting Recruitment Examinations: This is IBPS's primary function. It conducts several major exams annually for recruitment to different roles in public sector banks and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs). These include:

    • IBPS PO (Probationary Officer/Management Trainee): For officer-level positions.

    • IBPS Clerk: For clerical cadre positions.

    • IBPS SO (Specialist Officer): For specialized roles like IT Officer, Agricultural Field Officer, Law Officer, HR/Personnel Officer, Marketing Officer, and Rajbhasha Adhikari.

    • IBPS RRB (Regional Rural Banks): For both Officer Scale (I, II, III) and Office Assistant (Clerk) posts in rural banks.

  2. Standardized Assessment: IBPS develops and implements standardized systems for assessment, ensuring fairness, objectivity, and transparency in the selection process. This involves:

    • Designing online application formats.

    • Conducting online examinations (Preliminary and Main exams).

    • Scoring objective tests and evaluating descriptive papers.

    • Conducting group exercises and interviews (for certain posts).

  3. Providing Personnel Selection Services: Beyond its own examinations, IBPS offers its expertise and services to various organizations in the BFSI sector (Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance), and even other sectors like agriculture and steel, for:

    • Recruitment: Assisting client organizations in their hiring processes.

    • Promotion: Helping with internal promotion assessments.

    • Placement: Aiding in appropriate personnel placement.

  4. Assessment Centers: IBPS utilizes assessment center methodology to identify knowledge, skills, and competencies of applicants for suitable positions through simulated tasks and job roles.

  5. Capacity Building and Training:

    • Provides training programs for senior staff in client organizations to develop their observational and interviewing skills.

    • Conducts workshops for those who design question papers.

  6. Nominating Experts: IBPS maintains a database of subject matter experts from various fields and nominates them for assessment processes at the request of client organizations.

Why is IBPS Important?

Before IBPS, candidates had to apply for and write multiple exams conducted by individual banks. IBPS streamlined and centralized this process, making it more efficient, standardized, and accessible to a wider range of aspiring candidates across the country. It plays a vital role in ensuring a fair and merit-based selection of personnel for the crucial Indian banking sector.
