About the Employer
Southern Railway is one of the 18 zones of Indian Railways, serving a vast and culturally rich area in the southern part of the country.1 It is a vital transportation network for millions of people.
History
Foundation: Southern Railway was the first railway zone to be created in independent India.2 It was formed on April 14, 1951, by merging three state railway systems: the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway Company, and the Mysore State Railway.3
Early Beginnings: The history of the railway system in this region dates back even further, with the first railway line in India operating in Madras (now Chennai) as early as 1836.4
Headquarters: Its headquarters are located in an administrative building in Chennai, which is a notable Indo-Saracenic structure completed in 1921.5
Jurisdiction and Divisions
Southern Railway's network extends over a large area, covering the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry, as well as a small portion of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.6
The zone is divided into six administrative divisions, each headed by a Divisional Railway Manager:7
Chennai Division: Covers parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.8 It is a major hub for both passenger and suburban services.
Tiruchchirappalli Division: The second-largest division, serving central Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry.9
Madurai Division: Covers southern Tamil Nadu.
Palakkad Division: Operates across parts of Kerala and Karnataka.10
Salem Division: Established in 2007, it covers a significant portion of the rail network in Tamil Nadu.
Thiruvananthapuram Division: Manages the rail network in Kerala and a portion of southern Tamil Nadu.11
Services and Operations
Southern Railway operates a wide range of services, including:
Passenger Trains: It operates a large number of passenger trains, from long-distance express and superfast trains (including Vande Bharat Express and Tejas Express) to short-distance passenger and suburban services.12
Suburban Rail: The Chennai Suburban Railway is one of the most extensive and busiest suburban networks in the country, carrying a huge volume of daily commuters.13
Freight: While passenger traffic is its primary focus, Southern Railway also plays a significant role in freight transportation, carrying commodities like coal, cement, and food grains.14
Heritage Site: The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, which falls under Southern Railway's jurisdiction, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
