About the Employer

The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) is a government body in the state of Tamil Nadu, India, responsible for recruiting candidates for various state government jobs.1 It is the successor to the Madras Service Commission, which was the first Provincial Public Service Commission in India, established in 1929.2 The TNPSC operates under Articles 315 to 323 of Part XIV of the Constitution of India.3

Key Functions and Roles

The TNPSC's primary role is to ensure a fair, transparent, and merit-based recruitment process for civil services in Tamil Nadu.4 Its key functions include:

  • Conducting Examinations: It conducts competitive exams to select candidates for various state government positions, from high-ranking administrative roles to clerical and technical positions.5

  • Advising the Government: The commission advises the Tamil Nadu government on matters related to framing recruitment rules, making appointments and promotions, and disciplinary cases involving government servants.6

  • Managing Promotions: It plays a role in the promotion of officers, with many promotions requiring confirmation by the TNPSC's Departmental Promotion Committee.7

TNPSC Exams

The TNPSC conducts a range of examinations, which are primarily categorized into different groups:8

  • Group I Services: This group includes top-level executive posts, such as Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), and Assistant Commissioner.9 The selection process typically involves a three-stage examination: Prelims, Mains, and an Interview.10

  • Group II & IIA Services: These exams recruit for mid-level administrative posts.11 Group II positions involve a Prelims, Mains, and Interview, while Group IIA is a non-interview post, with selection based on the written exam alone.12

  • Group IV Services: This group is for entry-level posts like Junior Assistant, Village Administrative Officer (VAO), and Bill Collector.13 The selection is usually based on a single written examination, with no interview stage.14

  • Other Exams: The TNPSC also conducts specialized exams for technical and other specific roles, such as Assistant Engineer, as well as departmental tests and language tests for government employees.15

Eligibility and Application

The eligibility criteria for TNPSC exams vary depending on the specific group and post, but generally include:

  • Nationality: Applicants must be Indian citizens.16

  • Educational Qualification: The required qualification can range from a graduation degree for Group I and II services to an SSLC (10th standard) certificate for Group IV.

  • Age Limit: Age limits also vary by group and are subject to relaxation for certain categories as per state rules.

  • Language: Candidates must be well-versed in the Tamil language.17

The application process for all TNPSC exams is conducted online through its official website.18 Candidates are required to register for a "One Time Registration" (OTR) profile, which is valid for five years.19
